UK RAF Officer Peaked Cap

The cap generally looks the part when compared to old black and white RAF photos. However, the peak is more curved and rounded than the original, which was more shovel-shaped and flatter. The front of the crown is also higher than historical examples.

The leather sweatband is often hastily attached, leaving untrimmed leather that can be uncomfortable against the forehead. The lower edge of the headband can point straight at the forehead, requiring trimming to make it wearable. Some caps also have odd folds in the headband where the cap badge was sewn through it.

The cap generally has a good fit, with some finding it fits better than issued military caps. However, some caps are described as having a snug fit. One cap had a sticker label suggesting the correct size, while the tag in the cap stated a different size.

The cap badge is well-done and considered fantastic, with some finding it as nice as any available. The crest is described as very good, though one cap had a bird's head on the shield that was an amorphous mess.

The chin strap is made of plastic or vinyl. Some caps ship with a plastic strap, while others have a vinyl chipstrap. It is suggested that a polished cowhide or patent leather strap would be a better alternative.

The peak of the cap curls when it gets wet. This curling happens as soon as it starts to rain. This can affect the shape and appearance of the cap.
