UK RAF Field Service Cap

The cap generally runs small, and ordering one size larger than your usual size is recommended for a good fit. For example, a 7 1/2" head often fits perfectly in a 7 5/8" cap. Ordering a size up can also contribute to a more authentic 'wartime' look. Some caps are less tolerant of a larger size if they are shorter in height.

The cap is made from blue wool. The colour is generally a good match for other RAF battledress items from the same supplier. Some caps have a darker colour and softer material than previous versions. There can be some bright blue flecks in the material.

The construction of the cap can vary between individual items. Some caps have been received with incorrect construction, such as the front buttoning up on the wrong side. However, replacement caps generally arrive with correct construction and a better shape. The earflaps are stitched in place, but only tacked, making them easy to free if desired.

The cap does not come with pre-drilled eyelets for a badge. Two brass eyelets need to be added to fit a badge. Eyelets for the side flap hooks are already in place.

The cap's colour generally matches other RAF battledress items from the same supplier. It also matches the colour and texture of the serge of the OASD tunic and trousers. However, some caps have a slightly different colour than some battledress, which was not unusual for original items.
