US Garrison Shoes

These are reproductions of the Type II Service Shoe, also known as US Garrison Shoes. They are the smooth russet ankle boots worn by all Army troops in the early part of the war. They are suitable for collectors and reenactors portraying this period.

The shoes are generally comfortable and fit well for many, with some finding them surprisingly comfortable even during marching or running. Sizing can be inconsistent, with some finding their normal size too large and others finding it snug. The vamp can be very tight for some, requiring stretching to fit.

The leather is described as supple and without the awful paint seen on some other reproductions. However, some shoes have thinner leather, particularly on the tongue. There are instances of damage, such as small cuts or deep cuts, on the leather of some boots.

These shoes wear well and are comfortable for extended use, with some having put over 100 miles on them in various conditions. For serious walking or marching, it is recommended to experiment with socks and insoles. Adding a gel insole can significantly improve comfort for long distances.

The quality half soles and heels are well stitched and nailed in accurate places and calibre. The soles are generally well made and sturdy. However, the leather outsoles and heels may protrude too far from the counter heels compared to original examples.
